Terrapin Invitational Up Next for Bulldogs

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale field hockey team is on the road again this weekend, this time heading to Maryland for the Terrapin Invitational. The Bulldogs play American Saturday (9:00 a.m., Live Stats; re-scheduled from Friday night) and No. 4 Maryland Sunday (12:00 p.m. (B1G+, Live Stats).
 
LAST WEEKEND
Yale opened the 2023 season with a split last weekend in Philadelphia, winning 1-0 at Temple Friday and falling 6-1 at then-No. 11 Saint Joseph's Sunday. Senior goalkeeper Luanna Summer (St. Louis, Mo.) had eight saves in the shutout at Temple.
 
GOTTHARDT DOUBLES UP ON GOALS
Both of Yale's goals last weekend came from junior midfielder/forward Nicole Gotthardt (Tarzana, Calif.) on penalty corners. They marked the first two goals of her Yale career.
 
STREAKY BARLOW 
Junior midfielder/forward Ellie Barlow (Dunmow, Essex, England), Yale's primary inserter on penalty corners, had an assist in each game last weekend. Her longest streak of consecutive games with an assist was four, set last year from Sept. 23 through Oct. 2. She has started 21 straight games, dating back to Oct. 30, 2021.
 
STOPPED BY STAADECKER
Junior back Colette Staadecker (Weybridge, Surrey, England) made the most of her first career start Sunday, registering a pair of defensive saves in the first quarter.
 
A BUSY SUMMER
Senior goalkeeper Luanna Summer (St. Louis, Mo.) is third in the nation in saves per game (9.50). She has extended her streak of consecutive games started to 36, dating back to the beginning of the 2021 season.
 
RANKED OPPONENTS
Yale's schedule includes five games against teams currently ranked in the top 20 of the NFHCA National Coaches Poll:
  • at No. 4 Maryland (Sept. 10)
  • at No. 10 Saint Joseph's (L, 6-1 Sept. 3)
  • vs. No. 14 Harvard (Sept. 29)    
  • vs. No. 15 Princeton (Oct. 27)
  • at No. 20 UMass (Oct. 1)  
The Bulldogs' win vs. then-No. 24 Penn on Oct. 22, 2022 marked the Bulldogs' first win vs. a ranked opponent since beating then-No. 23 UMass 1-0 on Oct. 22, 2017. 
 
SCOUTING AMERICAN
American (2-2, 0-0 Patriot League) is 2-0 against unranked opponents and 0-2 against ranked opponents so far this season. Goalie Bryn Underwood's .844 save percentage ranks No. 4 nationally.
 
SCOUTING No. 4 MARYLAND
No. 4 Maryland (4-1, 0-0 Big Ten), which plays Miami (Ohio) on Friday at the Terrapin Invitational,  has allowed just three goals in its first five games. That includes three shutouts, tied for the NCAA lead. The Terps are coming off a 2022 season in which they went 19-4 overall (10-0 at home) and advanced to the NCAA semifinals.
