Team 151will hit the road for their third road game of the season when they travel to Philadelphia, Pa. for an Ivy League tilt against the Penn Quakers. The Bulldogs are coming off a 38-23 victory over Lehigh on Oct. 19 where they retained the Yank Townsend Trophy, a tradition upheld since 2006. Friday's game under the lights will be aired live on ESPNU from Franklin Field.
What You Need to Know:
- Yale wrapped its non-conference slate against Lehigh last weekend and enters the day with a 3-2 overall record and an 0-2 record in Ivy League play.
- Last week, Tre Peterson led the Bulldogs with 98 rushing yards, including a 57-yard touchdown late in the third quarter to give Yale a 21-point lead.Â
- Grant Jordan's rushing touchdown against Lehigh marked the third-straight game the senior found the endzone using his legs. His 55 rushing yards were a season high.Â
- Josh Tarver has caught three interceptions this season for a team-high, which is tied for first in the Ivy. Da'Quan Gonzales also has two interceptions this season, good for second in the conference.
- Yale owns the all-time record (51-37-1) between the pair dating back to 1879.Â
- Penn has taken the last two meetings against Yale. In 2023, they took a 27-17 victory over the Bulldogs at the Yale Bowl. The last time they were at Franklin Field, the Quakers took a 20-13 win, which snapped a four-game winning streak for Yale dating back to 2017.Â
- The Bulldogs are ranked No. 25 in the FCS in 3rd down conversion with a .440 conversion rate.Â
- On the defensive end, Abu Kamara is having a productive year, currently ranking first in FCS Football in solo tackles per game (7.6) and 22nd in total tackles per game (8.8).Â
- The Penn is the first of a two-game road stint for Yale. They will travel to Columbia on Friday, Nov. 1.Â
- Tony Reno, The Joel E. Smilow '54 Head Coach of the Bulldogs who is in his 12th season at the helm, earned his 70th win at Yale against Lehigh. He is one win shy of tying Jack Siedlecki (71) for second in program history for wins by a coach.Â
- The Bulldogs are coming off a memorable 2023 season. After dropping its first two games – to Holy Cross and Cornell - Yale won seven of its final eight games, including a 23-18 victory over Harvard in the finale that secured an Ivy championship. The Bulldogs, who finished 7-3 overall and 5-2 in Ivy play, shared the crown with Harvard and Dartmouth.
- Yale is the preseason favorite to earn a third straight Ivy title but by a narrow margin. In the official league preseason media poll, the Bulldogs received six of the 16 first-place votes and finished with 114 points, six more than second-place Harvard, which got seven first-place votes. Penn (2 first-place votes, 88 points) is picked third, while Princeton (1 first-place vote) and Dartmouth both had 80 points. Brown (56 points), Cornell (26) and Columbia (24) round out the poll.
- The Bulldogs return four All-Ivy selections from a year ago. Running back Josh Pitsenberger was a second team selection, while offensive lineman Michael Bennett, defensive lineman Alvin Gulley, Jr. and defensive back Sean Guyton were honorable mention selections. Pitsenberger, Gulley, Guyton, kick returner Joey Felton, tight end Ry Yates, and defensive lineman Dylan Yang were named preseason All-Ivy by college football analyst Phil Steele.
Scouting Penn
- Penn has alternated its win/losses this season. After dropping its season opener to Delware (22-29), they defeated Colgate, lost to Dartmouth, beat Bucknell, before dropped a 23-17 decision to Columbia last weekend.
- Quakers quarterback Aidan Sayin has tossed for 1,108 yards and has a 60.61% completion rate.
