Bulldogs, Big Red Set for Friday Night Showdown at Johnson Field

Lily Ramsey (shown here) and her sister Emma will face their cousin, Cornell's leading scorer Julia Ramsey, on Friday.
Friday, 6:00 p.m. vs. Cornell
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale field hockey team hosts a critical Ivy League game Friday against Cornell (6:00 p.m., ESPN+, International Stream, Live Stats). The Bulldogs and Big Red are currently part of a four-way tie for fourth in the league standings, with the winner of Friday's game set to get a leg up on earning one of the four spots in the Ivy League Tournament. Just three weekends of regular season play remain after this.

LAST WEEKEND
Yale lost at then-No. 9 Harvard 3-1 Friday and at Monmouth 2-1 Sunday. Junior forward Poppy Beales (King's Lynn, Norfolk, England) and junior forward/midfielder Lauren Venter (Knysna, Western Cape, South Africa) scored Yale's goals for the weekend.

CLOSE CALLS
Sunday marked the third one-goal loss of the season for Yale. Dating back to last season, eight of the Bulldogs' last 10 losses have been by one goal or by a shootout.

BULLDOGS LEAD LEAGUE
Yale leads the Ivy League, and is 18th nationally, in assists per game (2.40). That includes a season-high seven assists in the season-opening 6-1 win at Lehigh Sept. 6.

BEALES ON A ROLL
Yale's leading scorer, junior forward Poppy Beales (King's Lynn, Norfolk, England), has at least one point in four of the last five games. During that stretch she has four goals and an assist. For the season she is tied for second in the Ivy League in goals with six, just three away from her personal high (nine goals, last season). She is 15th on Yale's career list with 19 goals.

RAMSEY FAMILY FEUD CONTINUES
Cornell's leading scorer is Julia Ramsey (4-0-8), and that name should be familiar to Yale fans – and not just because her sister Caroline Ramsey played for the Big Red from 2019 through 2023. Cornell's Ramseys are cousins of Yale's Ramseys, senior forward Lily Ramsey (Summit, N.J.) and sophomore midfielder/forward Emma Ramsey (Summit, N.J.). All four Ramseys attended Oak Knoll School of the Holy Child.

The last time Yale and Cornell played a game in which there was not at least one Ramsey involved was 2018. Additionally, Caroline and Julia Ramsey's brother Nicholas Ramsey played for Yale's men's lacrosse team, graduating this past year. And a cousin of all those Ramseys, Annie Thomas, played for Cornell's women's lacrosse team.
