NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale men's lacrosse team opened the 2024 season with an impressive 13-11 victory over Villanova on Saturday. The Bulldogs won't have to wait long for the opportunity to earn win No. 2. Yale travels to Albany, N.Y., on Wednesday night to face Colgate in a neutral site game at UAlbany's Bob Ford Field at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium.

• With the game tied at 11-11,
Carson Kuhl scored twice in the final five minutes of the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs edged Villanova in Saturday's season opener. Kuhl finished with three goals, the first hat trick of his career at Yale.

David Anderson also tallied his first career hat trick in the win. His three goals came on eight shots.

Matt Brandau tallied four assists in the victory over the Wildcats, giving him 109 in his career which moved him into second place all-time at Yale. He trails only Ben Reeves, who had 139 assists from 2015 to 2018. Brandau also scored twice and now has 156 career goals. He needs six more to tie Jon Reese (1987-90) for the second most in school history.

Patrick Pisano, who had five ground balls and four caused turnovers on Saturday, was named the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week. Pisano, a sophomore, made his first career start in the game.

Machado Rodriguez won 14-of-26 faceoffs against the Wildcats.

Jared Paquette finished with 11 saves to earn the victory in goal.

• Yale has won its season opener in each of the last four seasons.

• Yale returns its top five scorers from last year's team that finished 9-6 overall, advanced to the championship game of the Ivy League Tournament and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Included among the many returners are first team All-Ivy selections Brandau,
Michael Alexander and
Jack Stuzin.

• Yale was picked second in the official Ivy League preseason media poll. Cornell is the favorite. The Big Red received all 14 first-place votes and had 92 points. The Bulldogs were next with 79 points followed by Princeton (73 points), Penn (55), Harvard (40), Brown (32) and Dartmouth (15).

• Four Bulldogs earned Inside Lacrosse preseason All-America recognition. Brandau was named to the third team, while Stuzin,Â

Chris Lyons were honorable mention selections.

• Brandau and Lyons were named to theÂ
first Tewaaraton Award Watch List, which was released on Tuesday. Brandau begins the 2024 season with 154 career goals and 105 career assists, which are both third in school history, and 259 career points, which is second all-time at Yale. Lyons finished second in the nation in goals per game (4.12) last spring, and his 62 goals tied for the second most in a season in school history and were the most ever by a sophomore at Yale.

The Raiders (3-1) are playing their second straight game at Bob Ford Field at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium. They edged UAlbany 11-10 there on Saturday. Rory Connor's goal with 1:25 remaining in the fourth quarter was the game winner. Colgate also has victories over Hobart and then No. 4 Penn State. The Raiders loss came at Syracuse. Connor was Colgate's top scorer last season, tallying 37 points with 26 goals and 11 assists.Â

HISTORY LESSONS

Neutral site games are not new for Yale and Colgate. The teams played in Boca Raton, Fla., in 1999, 2000 and 2001. The Bulldogs won two of the three games. The first meeting in the series came in 1929, an 11-2 Yale victory.
