Bulldogs Finish Ninth at NCAA Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Yale fencing teams combined to finish ninth at the NCAA Championship at Ohio State University. The Bulldogs amassed 89 points over the four-day event.

The men wrapped up on Sunday, and three Bulldogs competed. First year Jordan Silberzweig placed fifth in saber, earning All-American honors. Silberzweig won 16-of-23 bouts to cap off an outstanding debut year which included an individual Ivy League Championship victory.

Senior Ted Vinnitchouk narrowly missed out on All-American accolades, placing 10th in the epee. Vinnitchouk was defeated in his final bout which put him outside of the top-8 in the overall standings. Sophomore Tony Whelan also competed in the epee, finishing 19th overall and winning eight of 23 bouts.

Harvard won the NCAA Championship, finishing with 169 points. Notre Dame (161) was second, followed by Columbia (149), Princeton (131) and Penn State (130).

The Yale women's team competed on the first two days -- Thursday and Friday. First year Kristina Petrova and Sydney Hirsch earned All-American honors for placing in the top-eight in the foil and saber respectively.

While Hirsch and Vinnitchouk wrapped up their collegiate careers, Silberzweig, Petrova, and Whelan are set to return next season.
