NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Alex Deng, who has been a consistent scorer in the breaststroke, has been elected captain of the 2024-25 Yale men's swimming and diving team.
"I am beyond grateful that the team has trusted me with the responsibility of being captain in this upcoming year," said Deng of Eden Prairie, Minn. "It feels surreal that everyone has placed their trust and support in me, and I could not be more excited to build upon the work of all the leaders before me. We have had great shifts in culture throughout my time here at Yale, and I hope to continue pushing our way to the top of the Ivy League while I am here, and years after I am gone."
Deng is coming off a strong season that saw him finish 10th at the Ivy League Championship in the 200 breaststroke and 11th in the 100 breaststroke. As a sophomore, he placed sixth in the 200 breast at Ivys, and as a first year in 2022 he was part of the 200 medley relay that set a school record at Ivys.
Deng has benefitted from the strong leadership provided by previous captains during his time at Yale.
"Learning from the upperclassmen before me in my three years here has given me invaluable lessons on what type of leader I want to be," he said. "Leading with different styles, all having elements of passion, compassion, support, and dedication, I know that different people need different things, and I hope to take elements of leadership that resonate with me and give someone else the same treatment."
Deng, who will be staying New Haven until June to prepare for the US Olympic Trials, will be working a remote SDE internship throughout the summer.
