DERBY, Conn. -- The 2025-26 Yale lightweight squad made its debut on its flat-water home river Saturday at the Head of the Housatonic. Every member of the Yale was able to race at least once, and many twice.
The Head of the Housatonic is the first fall test, usually with great water and a simple course with long straightaway stretches. It is one of the largest regattas in the country, with 80 events spanning two days.
Results
- As there was no lightweight eight event, the lightweights entered three boats in the Men's Collegiate 8+ (IRA) HVA Cup event, where they competed against their heavyweight counterparts and opposing crews from Brown, Massachusetts Maritime, Trinity and Williams. Brown 'A' finished first, followed by Yale HWT 'A', Brown 'B', and Yale 'B', with the lightweights two seconds behind in fifth. The Eli 'B' and 'C' boats were 12th and 13th.
- A short time later Yale raced three boats in the Men's Open 4+, where the Y150 earned first, third and – in a boat with all newcomers – ninth. The first-place boat finished in 14:32.617, nearly two seconds better than second-place Trinity (14:34.118).
- Yale had four boats in the Men's Open 2-/2x, where the Y150 boats earned second through fifth. The winners — in a double scull, not a pair – were the Manson brothers, Karl and Robbie, from New Zealand. Junior Timmy Parsons and sophomore Fielding Staelin were the first pair to finish, followed by junior Max Blacksten and senior Andrew Kasparyan, then sophomore Finlay Murray and junior Raph Clark, then sophomore Ry Natterson and first-year Fiver Press.
