Schwarzkopf Named Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- First-year goalkeeper Amelie Schwarzkopf (Berlin, Germany), who led the No. 17 Yale field hockey team to a 2-0 weekend that included a historic 1-0 shootout win at UConn Sunday, has been named Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week. The league announced the award Monday afternoon.

Schwarzkopf went 2-0 for the weekend, earning a critical Ivy League win Friday at Columbia as the Bulldogs beat the Lions 4-1. She followed that up with a shutout Sunday at UConn, helping Yale to its first win against the Huskies in program history. The Bulldogs had been 0-35 in the series, which began in 1975.

Schwarzkopf made five saves in regulation/overtime Sunday. With the game still scoreless after the second overtime, the two teams went to a best-of-five shootout. Yale scored in round one and round four. Schwarzkopf stopped the Huskies in each of the first three rounds, then again in round four to seal the win.

Schwarzkopf is a graduate of Dreilinden Gymnasium and played for Berliner Hockey Club. She has played for Germany's U18 and U16 national teams.

Yale is 9-2 overall and 2-2 in Ivy League play, tied for fourth with Cornell. The Bulldogs host Dartmouth Friday at 5:00 p.m.
