Lightweights Fall to Penn in Battle for Dodge, Colgan Cups

Shown here: The Yale 1V.
CAMDEN, N.J. – A stiff crosswind and light chop greeted the crews on the Cooper River Saturday morning, as Columbia, Penn and Yale squared off for the Dodge and Colgan Cups. When the spray settled, Penn claimed both trophies for the second consecutive season, edging the Bulldogs in all three races.
  • The first race of the morning featured Yale's third varsity eight racing against Penn's third and fourth varsity eights. Penn's 3V struck first, taking a half-length lead in the opening 20 strokes while Yale wrestled with the crosswind. The Quaker 3V stretched their margin to a sliver of open water on Yale through the middle 1,000 meters as the Penn 4V dropped away. The Bulldogs found another gear in the final sprint, clawing back to overlapping decks at the line, but Penn's early buffer held.
  • Next up was the second varsity event. A rough start left the Bulldogs in third as Penn and Columbia surged out front. Columbia briefly claimed half a length on Yale, but by the 750-meter mark, the Elis had settled into their rhythm and begun their move. Yale rowed through the Lions before halfway, then set its sights on the Quakers. Inside the last 600 meters, the Bulldogs charged forward, but Penn matched the lift to finish about a length clear, with Columbia dropping behind the field.
  • The varsity eight contest rounded out the already eventful day of racing. Consistent with their other boat classes, Penn seized the lead straight off the stake-boats, carrying three seats on Yale and Columbia at 500 meters and nearly half a length by halfway. Yale answered in the third 500, unleashing its best move of the day to cut the deficit to a single seat while simultaneously dispatching Columbia. The Cooper River crowd braced for a bow-ball thriller, but the Quakers found one more push in the sprint, re-extending their lead to almost a length over Yale at the horn, with Columbia trailing behind by open water.
With its win in the varsity eight, Penn successfully defended the Marcellus Hartley Dodge Cup, first awarded in 1955. The Quakers also claimed the Colgan Cup for overall team points for the second straight year in the trophy's three-year history.

The Y150 returns to Gilder on Apr. 19 for its only home race of the season, where the Bulldogs will compete against Dartmouth for the Durand Cup.
