Yale Golf Course

After a Historic Restoration, Yale Golf Course Reopens Ahead of Centennial Celebration

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Following a comprehensive restoration led by renowned golf course architect Gil Hanse, the Yale Golf Course will reopen to the public on April 28, 2026. The project returns the course to the original 1926 vision of designers Charles Blair Macdonald and Seth Raynor as it celebrates its centennial year.

As Macdonald — heralded as the "evangelist of golf" in the United States — declared in his autobiography: "Today, Yale has a classical course, which is unequaled in comparison with any inland course in this country or Europe."

Under Hanse's direction, the course was restored to Macdonald's and Raynor's original scale and strategic intent, preserving its architectural integrity while upgrading its infrastructure to modern championship standards. As Golf Digest recently noted, the project is one of the most significant golf course restorations in recent decades and will reestablish the Yale Golf Course among the world's elite venues.

"As we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Yale Golf Course, this restoration honors both its history and architectural significance while positioning it for the future," said Victoria M. "Vicky" Chun, Yale's Thomas A. Beckett Director of Athletics. "This meticulous restoration preserves the strategic brilliance of Macdonald and Raynor's vision while integrating modern infrastructure and sustainable practices. We're proud to reopen a world-class landmark that reflects the excellence and tradition synonymous with Yale."

Restoration highlights included expanding course features — greens, tees, bunkers, and fairways — to their historic dimensions and rebuilding the iconic Double Punch Bowl green on Hole No. 3 to its original 1926 design. The course's distinctive double fairway holes (Nos. 3 and 18) were also restored, along with two rare inverted bunkers on Hole No. 6.

Other major infrastructure improvements included:
  • Reconstructing the green complex to USGA specifications for the first time in course history.
  • Adding a state-of-the-art irrigation system with enhanced water conservation.
  • Strategic bunker restoration and expanding teeing areas to championship standards.
  • Undertaking comprehensive tree management to restore original sight lines.
  • Improving cart paths for enhanced course flow.
All greens utilize a proprietary bent grass and fescue seed blend developed specifically for Yale's growing conditions. New championship tees extend the course to a length of more than 7,000 yards while maintaining the integrity of the 1926 layout.

Ahead of the course's reopening, Yale Athletics will share a video series throughout March and April highlighting key aspects of the restoration. Follow along on Yale Athletics' digital and social channels for an inside look at the project.
