PHILADELPHIA – Competition continued Friday at the Penn Relays for the Yale women's track and field team. The day was highlighted by multiple school records.
Track competition began with a record-breaking performance from Yale's 4x100m relay team of junior
Sophie Spokes, junior
Lucija Grd, senior
Casia Provencal and junior
Juliette Kosmont. Their time of 45.41 in the Championship of America heats bested the school record of 45.58 set in 2022 by
Ava Thomas '22,
Libby McMahon '22,
Aliya Boshnak '23 and
Sophie Isom '22. They placed 15th overall.
Grd and Kosmont were not done breaking records. Kosmont was up next, in the 100m dash heats, and delivered a time of 11.52 to break her own school record (11.68, set at the UConn Dog Fight Apr. 4). Kosmont placed first in her heat and second overall, trailing only Pitt's Somiyah Braggs (11.45). Kosmont qualified for Saturday's championship automatically.
Grd then went out and broke her own school record in the 100m hurdles. Her time of 13.43 bested her previous mark of 13.48 set at the UConn Dog Fight. She placed fourth overall and qualified for Saturday's championship on time. Texas A&M All-American Jaiya Covington was first overall and first in Grd's heat (12.98).
Yale's 4x400m relay team of junior
Gloria Guerrier, Spokes, Grd and junior
Victoria Guerrier ran a time of 3:41.36, fourth-fastest in school history. They placed 18th in the Championship of America heats, right ahead of Ivy League rival Cornell.
In the field events, first-year
Constanza Acevedo placed second in the Javelin Throw College with a mark of 45.09m. Additionally, a trio of Bulldogs competed in the Shot Put College. Senior
Makayla Harris placed eighth (14.08m), sophomore
Anna Siciliano placed 10th (13.77m) and junior
Emma Peretti placed 27th (12.73m).
The historic meet, which runs through Saturday, is the oldest and largest track and field competition in the United States. It typically attracts more than 17,000 competitors and 100,000 spectators.
