NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The final weekend of May finds Yale Lightweight Crew out West for the 124th running of the IRA National Championships. The Y150 has a fleet of two eight-man crews and one four-man crew ready to compete on the national stage. Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif., is the site.
In contrast to regular season dual races and the Eastern Sprints Championship of two weeks ago, this regatta will be held over the span of three days.
The No. 7 ranked varsity eight will kick off its weekend with an 8:56 a.m. PT heat on Friday against No. 2 Princeton, No. 3 Dartmouth, No. 6 MIT and No. 10 Navy. The Bulldogs have finished ahead of Dartmouth once already this season (for the Durand Cup) and finished ahead of Navy three times (for the Johnson Cup and twice at Sprints – once in the heats, once in the Petite Final).
The top three finishers in each of Friday's two 1V heats will move on to the Grand Final on Sunday at 11:34 a.m. PT. The remaining crews will race in Sunday's Petite Final at 11:26 a.m. PT.
The No. 9 ranked JV will first compete in an 8:00 a.m. PT heat on Friday against No. 1 Penn, No. 4 Georgetown, No. 5 Navy and No. 10 MIT. The Yale 2V has finished ahead of MIT twice already this season (once during Joy Cup competition and in the Petite Final at Sprints).
The top three crews from each of Friday's two 2V heats will advance to the 10:12 a.m. Grand Final on Sunday, while the remaining crews will compete in Sunday's 10:04 a.m. Petite Final.
The varsity four will compete in time trials at 11:45 a.m. PT on Friday. The two semifinals take place later that day, at 4:40 p.m. PT and 4:48 p.m. PT, with the top six boats advancing to Saturday's Grand Final (11:12 a.m. PT) and the remainder competing in Saturday's Petite Final (10:56 a.m. PT).
The first-place lightweight varsity crew at IRAs will earn the distinction of national champion and claim the 1922 Trophy. Yale has won that trophy five times since it was first awarded in 1990.
A team points trophy will be awarded to the team with the highest overall finish across the varsity and JV events, with the varsity race given more weight.
