No. 11 Men’s Lacrosse Set to Open NCAA Play at No. 8 Syracuse

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The No. 11 Yale men's lacrosse team is set to begin competition on the national stage, facing No. 8 Syracuse (No. 6 seed) in an ESPNU televised clash in the NCAA Tournament First Round on Sunday, May 10 at 5 p.m.

  • The No. 9 Bulldogs (No. 3 seed) fell to No. 2 Princeton (No. 2 seed), 12-10, in the Ivy League Tournament semifinals on Friday night at Schoelkopf Field.
  • The Bulldogs built a 6-2 lead early in the second quarter behind a fast start from Connor Gately and a balanced first half attack, but Princeton closed the half with three straight goals and then scored the first four goals of the third quarter to take control and didn't look back the rest of the way.

  • Gately is 20th in the nation in assists per game (2.07), which ranks second in the league, and Anderson is 23rd in individual man-up goals with five. 
  • Sean Grogan ranks 10th in the Ivy League in goals per game (2.00).
  • Nick Wehmeyer is sixth in the league in ground balls per game (3.62).
  • Patrick Pisano ranks third in the league in caused turnovers per game (1.43), and Luke Michalik is seventh (1.14).

Scouting Syracuse

  • Syracuse is ranked No. 8 in the latest Inside Lacrosse Media Poll and are the No. 6 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
  • The Orange most recently fell to North Carolina, 12-10, in the ACC semifinals, as the Tar Heels erased a 9-7 Syracuse lead with five fourth-quarter goals.
  • In the defeat, the Orange offense was led by Finn Thomson, Michael Leo, and Luke Rhoa, who each recorded a hat trick.
  • Joey Spallina was tabbed the ACC Offensive Player of the Year, becoming the first Syracuse player to earn the accolade since Sergio Salcido in 2017.
  • Spallina is a Tewaaraton finalist and became Syracuse's all-time points leader last month, passing Orange legend Mike Powell (307).
  • Spallina leads the team in points (30-45-75), and Thomson is first on the squad with 35 goals.
  • Yale and Syracuse last met in the NCAA first round in 2017, when the Orange secured an 11-10 victory.
