NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale men's golf team opens the 2026-27 season this weekend at the Doc Gimmler Invitational in Farmingdale, N.Y.
Preseason Notes
Leading the Bulldogs
Second Team All-Ivy recipient Matthew Lin was tabbed to lead the Bulldogs as captain for the 2026-27 season.
The Squad
Joining the Bulldogs this year are Austin Le (Houston, Texas), Shawn Nawata (Irvine, Calif.) and Theodore Snyder (Gig Harbor, Wash.). Returning alongside Lin are Andrew Stickel, Colin Li, Ansen Tran and Preston Howe. "We're really excited to start the year," said Head Coach Keith Tyburski. "We have a very talented group of newcomers combined with a solid veteran presence."
The Fall Slate
- The Bulldogs open the season in Farmingdale, N.Y., at the Doc Gimmler Invitational before returning home to host the Macdonald Cup, marking the first time Yale has competed on its home course since 2022.
- Following the Macdonald Cup, the Bulldogs will make two more tournament appearances at the Hamptons Intercollegiate and Metropolis Intercollegiate before wrapping up the fall with a scrimmage against Harvard.

About the Tournament
- The tournament will consist of three rounds and 54 total holes, with 36 holes played on Saturday and the final 18 holes on Sunday.
- In 2013, St. John's renamed the event from The McLaughlin to The Doc Gimmler to honor former Red Storm student-athlete and golf coach Jack "Doc" Gimmler. Gimmler arrived at St. John's in 1945 and helped lead the baseball team to the school's first College World Series appearance in 1949. After graduating, he went on to become the head athletic trainer at St. John's before taking over as head coach of the men's golf team and serving as associate director of athletics.
- Gimmler guided the men's golf program to its first BIG EAST title in 1979 and led the Johnnies to nine conference championships in the first 11 years of the league's existence. Under his direction, St. John's finished either first or second in the BIG EAST in all but one season between 1979 and 1990. He also led the program to 10 Metropolitan Championships and five NCAA Tournament appearances during his tenure.
- Gimmler passed away in 1996 and is remembered for his impact on collegiate golf, collegiate athletics and St. John's during more than four decades of service.

The 14-team field consists of Boston College, Bryant, Columbia, Hofstra, Iona, Lafayette, Lehigh, LIU, Providence, St. John's (host), Rhode Island, Towson, UConn and Yale.
About the Course
The Red Course at Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale, N.Y., is a historic public course designed by A.W. Tillinghast. The par-70 course stretches 7,092 yards and features heavily bunkered, tree-lined terrain.
