Box Score Trish Berkanish Scores First Career Goal
WORCESTER, Mass. - Freshman Trish Berkanish scored her first
career goal but it wasn't enough as the Yale women's soccer team
fell 4-1 to Holy Cross on a cold night at Linda Johnson Smith
Soccer Stadium. Chelsie Pugliese and Maura Fox scored 35 seconds
apart early in the first half to give the Crusaders control.
The Bulldogs, who received votes in this week's NSCAA national
poll, were playing their final non-league game of the season. The
loss snapped Yale's four-game winning streak.
Holy Cross (7-6-1) scored first at 14:59 when Pugliese settled a
Biz Shenk pass and fired a shot over the head of Yale goalkeeper
Ayana Sumiyasu. Just 35 seconds later, the Crusaders struck again.
This time it was Fox who did the honors unassisted.
Liz Early's goal midway through the second half increased the
lead to 3-0.
Berkanish got Yale (7-4) on the board at 85:19 when she took an
Alana Gebhart feed and beat Holy Cross goalkeeper Mary Ferketic
from a difficult angle.
Fox, though, scored her second goal of the game just 41 seconds
later to seal the win for the Crusaders.
Holy Cross outshot the Bulldogs 13-8, but Yale had a 5-2 edge in
corner kicks.
Sumiyasu finished with four saves, while Ferketic stopped three
shots.
The four goals were the most the Bulldogs have allowed in a game
this season.
Yale returns to Ivy League action on Saturday, hosting Cornell.
Kickoff at Reese Stadium is slated for 4:30 p.m.
