Ayana Sumiyasu Makes Three Saves For Bulldogs

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Kendall Thoreson scored the only goal of the game at 70:06 to lead Northwestern to a 1-0 victory over Yale on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon at Reese Stadium. Thoreson took a pass from Nicole Duller, dribbled down the left side and blasted a shot into the top right corner from 25 yards out.

"It was a great shot," said Yale head coach Rudy Meredith. "I give all the credit to Northwestern. They are a very good team. I thought they really took control of the midfield in the second half."

The goal was the first Yale (3-1) has allowed all season.

The Bulldogs entered Sunday's game with 12 goals in their three wins, but they were unable to capitalize on their opportunities against the Wildcats. Freshman Mary Kubiuk had two good chances late in the first half. On the first, a ball deflected off a Northwestern defender to her in the box, but her shot went high. A few minutes later, Kubiuk got behind the defense but saw her shot hit off the side of the net.

Yale picked up its play following Northwestern's goal, getting the next four shots and applying good pressure but was never able to get the equalizer.

The Wildcats, who beat Penn 2-1 on Friday night, outshot the Bulldogs 14-10. Yale had a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

"It was an even game," Meredith said. "I was happy with our effort. We just have to play a little smarter."

Carolyn Edwards finished with three saves to post the shutout in goal for Northwestern (3-3-1). Ayana Sumiyasu stopped three shots for the Bulldogs.

The game was the first ever for Yale against a Big Ten opponent.

The Bulldogs are back at Reese Stadium on Wednesday night, hosting Stony Brook at 7 p.m.
