Box Score Kubiuk, Hino Score As Yale Blanks Defending Ivy Champions
PRINCETON, N.J. - Yale women's soccer coach Rudy Meredith
knew it would take a complete performance to knock off Princeton in
Saturday's Ivy League opener. His team delivered. Mary Kubiuk and
Miyuko Hino both scored, and the Bulldogs' defense held the Tigers
in check en route to a 2-0 victory at Roberts Stadium.
"Our forwards worked hard and were able to put some pressure on
them," Meredith said, "and defensively this was probably one of our
best performances in quite a while."
Kubiuk, a freshman who scored the game-winning goal in Tuesday's
win over Quinnipiac, got Yale (5-3, 1-0 Ivy) on the board late in
the first half when she got behind the defense and knocked in the
rebound of a Becky Brown shot. Brown also set up Yale's second goal
early in the second half. She sent a ball through to Hino, who
broke in alone and beat Princeton goalkeeper Alyssa Pont at 55:43.
The Tigers (2-5-1, 0-1 Ivy) nearly got right back in the game
less than a minute after Hino's goal, but Ayana Sumiyasu made an
outstanding save to rob Jen Hoy.
"That save really turned the momentum," Meredith said. "If they
score, it could have changed the game. I think it helped settle us
down and maybe took a little wind out of their sail."
Sumiyasu finished with three saves to post her third shutout of
the season. She had plenty of help from defenders Sophia
Merrifield, Caitlin Collins, Hannah Smith, Megan Ashforth and
Lauren Mathy. All five of Yale's wins this season have come by
shutout.
Princeton outshot the Bulldogs 9-6, including 5-2 in the second
half, and had a 10-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Tigers shared last year's Ivy League title with Harvard.
The Bulldogs play the Crimson in their next game on Oct. 3.
Kickoff is slated for 4:30 p.m. at Reese Stadium.
