STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Kayla Kuretich pitched one of the best
games of her career on Friday against Quinnipiac. Unfortunately for
the Yale softball team, it didn't lead to a victory. Kim Le
Bel's infield single scored Julia Sini in the bottom of the
ninth inning as the Bobcats edged Yale 2-1 on the opening day of
the Stony Brook Invitational at University Field. In their first
game of the day, the Bulldogs dropped a 3-0 decision to Stony
Brook.
Kuretich was outstanding. She struck out a career-high 14 and
allowed only two hits. Quinnipiac starter Emily Bellush was nearly
as good, although her success came a little differently. She did
not strike out a single batter but yielded only five hits.
Ashley Sloan, Christy Nelson, Liz Tutino, Holly Gutterud and
Mariclaire Rebman had the Yale hits.
The Bulldogs (0-7) broke a scoreless tie by scoring in the top
of the seventh inning. Tutino's one-out single started the
rally. Katie Yanagisawa pinch ran for Tutino and advanced to second
on Gutterud's ground out. A wild pitch moved Yanagisawa to
third, and she scored on Rebman's clutch two-out single to
right center.
Kuretich retired the first two hitters in the bottom of the
seventh before Bellush stepped to the plate and tied the game with
a home run to centerfield.
A runner was placed on second in both extra innings, and it was
the Bobcats (8-12) who took advantage in the ninth. Sini, a pinch
runner, was sacrificed to third by Jessica Amenda. Kuretich retired
the next hitter before Le Bel's game-winning single.
Against Stony Brook, Vicki Kavitsky's two-run double
highlighted a three-run second inning to help the Seawolves (6-7)to
victory. Colleen Matthes tossed the four-hit shutout. She struck
out six and issued only one walk. Sloan and Meg Johnson both had
two hits for the Bulldogs. Gutterud pitched well in defeat,
yielding eight hits and striking out three.
The Bulldogs had a couple of good scoring opportunities. In the
first inning, Sloan led off with a single and Lauren Huddleston was
hit by a pitch. After Johnson's sacrifice bunt, Nelson walked
to load the bases. Matthes, though, struck out the next two hitters
to get out of the jam.
Sloan also started a Yale rally in the third with a bunt single.
Johnson then singled with one out, but Matthes again worked out of
trouble. The Bulldogs had only one baserunner the rest of the way.
Yale continues play at the Stony Brook Invitational on Saturday,
playing Fairfield at 2 p.m.
