Skinner, Labbadia Tally Two Hits On Day For Yale

ORLANDO, Fla. – Yale didn't make life easy for itself in its season openers, taking on one team that entered the day undefeated and a second that was ranked No. 22 in the nation. Still, the Bulldogs showed they can compete with top teams despite falling 4-0 to Charlotte and 8-2 to Central Florida at the Disney Complex.

"It was great to get out on the dirt and see where we stand against two very talented teams," said Yale head coach Jen Goodwin.

In the opener, Yale ran into a hot pitcher in Charlotte's Lexi Betancourt, who improved to 7-0 with a four-hit shutout. She struck out 10 and walked three.

Lauren Delgadillo, Rachel Paris, Francesca Casalino and Brittany Labbadia had hits for the Bulldogs.

Casalino started in the circle and struck out four in 4.2 innings.

Charlotte improved to 10-0 with the win.

"Francesca came out ready and was very effective today," Goodwin said. "Lauren and Francesca really hit the ball well today, but our bats were quieter than I anticipated. We made some good adjustments between games and it showed."

Against No. 22 Central Florida, Yale jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Allison Skinner singled home Shelby Kennedy to open the scoring, and Allie Souza drew a bases loaded walk.

UCF, though, scored twice in the second inning, four times in the third and twice more in the fourth.

Skinner had two hits for the Bulldogs. Camille Weisenbach also had a hit as did Kennedy, Souza and Labbadia.

Lindsay Efflandt started in the circle and was relieved by freshman Terra Jerpbak in the third inning.

"Coming out and scoring two runs against 22nd-ranked Central Florida in our second game proved that our bats can get the job done," Goodwin said. "Lindsay was in control today, and Terra was able to get some experience against a solid offense. Defensively, we had some real web gems, which is always fun. Allison had a timely hit in the first inning and Allie fouled off several pitches to earn a bases-loaded walk."

Yale plays Penn State at 11 a.m. and East Carolina at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
