Box Score 2 Adams has Big Day at the Plate
Annapolis, Maryland - Yale second baseman Nate Adams is having quite the start to his senior season.
Adams continued his hot start and seemed to be locked in at the dish against Navy on Sunday. The Bulldogs fell 11-4 in the opener of the doubleheader and then tied the Mishipmen 2-2 (seven inngings) in a rain-shortened second game.
Adams went 3-for-4 with a double, a run and a stolen base in the first game at Max Bishop Stadium. He followed with two more hits the finale to close out the weekend for Yale (0-7-1).
"He's had an incredible start to the season," Yale head coach John Stuper said.
Adams is batting .478 with 11 hits.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third after a two-run double by Griffen Day. But Navy responded with 11 runs over the next three frames.
"Navy is a good, solid team," Stuper said. "We are playing a lot of freshmen and sophomores, and that means they are going to make mistakes. The key is learning from them. I don't want my guys focusing on our record. I want them focusing on getting better each day."
Richard Slenker also went 3-for-3 with a solo home run for Yale. Alex Hoeschel added two hits.
Pitchers Kumar Nambiar and Drew Scott combined for a stellar performance on the mound in the tie. Namblar scattered seven hits and allowed two runs over five innings, while Drew Scott gave up one hit and struck out two in the final two innings.
"They were tremendous today," Stuper said.
Yale jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second game. Benny Wagner doubled to lead off the frame and later scored on Tim Degraw's single to right field. Trailing 2-1 in the seventh, Tom O'Neill plated Degraw with a sacrifice bunt to tie the game. Harrison White and Dey also chipped in with hits in the second game.
"It's a tie, not a win, but it's a step," Stuper said. "We are still trying to figure a bunch of things out. The rotation. The lineup. That's what these games are for, but we need to start getting some wins and I think we will. "
Yale closes its spring road trip with Georgetown on Tuesday and George Washington on Wednesday.
