Box Score 2 Bulldogs Top Cal State Northridge, Fall To UC Riverside
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Brittany Labbadia had a hit, an RBI and scored two runs as Yale earned a split of its two games on Saturday, topping Cal State Northridge 6-2 at the Mizuno Classic. In their first game, the Bulldogs fell to UC Riverside 7-5.
Yale (4-11) managed seven hits in the win over Northridge.
RBI doubles from freshmen Shelby Kennedy and Terra Jerpbak in the first inning gave the Bulldogs an early 2-0 lead. Sydney Ginsberg's single scored Carlin Hagmeier in the second, and Yale tacked on another run in the third with the help of an error.
Northridge got two back in the bottom of the third, but the Bulldogs answered with a pair in the fourth. Pinch hitter Allie Souza singled to start the rally, and Labbadia followed with a triple to right center. Labbadia then scored when Allison Skinner doubled down the right-field line.
Jerpbak pitched a complete game, allowing five hits and striking out four, to earn her first career victory.
"Terra was fantastic," said Yale head coach Jen Goodwin. "Not only did she do well in the circle, but her bat did some damage as well. It's a big win for us to come and beat a tough team like Northridge. I couldn't be happier with how we came out and competed today."
In the first game against UC Riverside, Skinner's sacrifice fly scored Sydney Glover in the first.
Riverside, though, answered with three runs in the bottom of the first and scored once in the second.
Yale got right back in the game when Laina Do doubled home two runs in the third, but UC Riverside tacked on an insurance run in the fifth.
The Bulldogs had runners on in the fourth and fifth innings but couldn't capitalize.
Lindsay Efflandt pitched 4.1 innings of relief, yielding just two hits and one run.
"We came out against Riverside on a mission and were just a few hits shy of pulling it out," Goodwin said. "Lindsay shut down their offense and kept us in the game. It was a well played game and we saw so many good things."
The Bulldogs conclude their stay in California with a single game against Cal State Northridge on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. PDT.
