Bulldogs Dominate at Season Opener

NORFOLK, Virginia - The Yale women's sailing team won the Old Dominion University Women's Intersectional this weekend.

Freshman skipper Louisa Nordstrom and senior crew Isabelle Rossi de Leon dominated A division. They finished with only 28 points in 12 races, 16 points ahead of College of Charleston. They won five races and only placed out of the top three twice.

In B division, freshman duo Chrissie Klingler and Graceann Nicolosi finished a strong third with 61 points. They successfully bested Charleston in the last three-race set, winning the regatta for the Bulldogs.

On Saturday, the breeze filled around noon and built throughout the day. Nordstrom comments, "Our boat handling improved throughout the day, and we had several ideal starts later in the event. On Saturday, we seemed to figure out the pattern before other boats did, and we did a good job of not getting distracted by transient puffs and shifts."

Sunday was much breezier in the morning, though it died a few knots and became shiftier by the late afternoon. Klingler and Nicolosi focused on starting strategically, allowing them to be properly positioned and have more options up the course. Coach William Healy agrees: "Today was all about risk management."

Next weekend, the Bulldogs will compete at the Spring Navy Women's Interconference and a co-ed event at Charleston, the 2017 Nationals venue.
