Tigers Win First Game In 11 Innings

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Yale and Princeton played a pair of games Saturday that weren't decided until the final at bat. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, both went to the Tigers. Pinch hitter Gianna Mavica's single to centerfield scored Kylee Pierce in the top of the 11th inning to lead Princeton to a 2-1 victory in the first game. Ashley LaGuardia tossed a complete-game two-hitter as the Tigers won the second game 4-2.

The first game was an epic pitcher's duel between Yale's Terra Jerpbak and Princeton's Allie Reynolds. Both tossed all 11 innings. Jerpbak struck out seven, while Reynolds had three strikeouts.

The Bulldogs had several opportunities to win, leaving two runners on base in the seventh, eighth and 10th innings.

Shelby Kennedy, Annie Tarte, Sydney Grobman, Carlin Hagmaier and Giovy Webb all had two hits for the Bulldogs.

Yale used a two-out rally to jump on the board first in the third inning. Back-to-back singles from Kennedy and Tarte started it, and Grobman followed with a clutch single to centerfield that scored Kennedy.

The lead was short lived as Princeton's Mackenzie Meyer homered to left-centerfield in the fourth.

It stayed tied all the way until the 11th.

The Bulldogs nearly pulled off a big comeback in the second game. They trailed 4-0 entering the bottom of the seventh. LaGuardia retired the first two hitters and it looked like she would cruise to the win. Pinch hitter Phylicia Wilkov, though, singled to start a Yale rally. Lindsay Kuss was then hit by a pitch, and Kennedy drew a walk to bring the tying run to the plate.

An error by Princeton's third baseman allowed two runs to score, but LaGuardia retired the next hitter to end the game.

Miranda Papes pitched well for the Bulldogs, allowing just four hits.

Hagmaier had Yale's only other hit, a double leading off the fourth inning. She also doubled in the first game.

The Bulldogs are next in action on Wednesday when they play a single game at Sacred Heart. The first pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
