Women's Sailing Wins Yale Event

Bulldogs Best on the Sound

The women's sailing team earned an impressive win this weekend while hosting the Yale Women's Regatta at the McNay Family Sailing Center.

Senior skipper Christine Klingler and sophomore crew Catherine Webb sailed consistently at the top of A division, not once scoring below fifth place over the course of 13 races. Their impressive score line earned them first place in A division with a remarkable 43-point lead on the second-place boat.

Christine Klingler '20 said of the weekend, "I was really happy to get to sail at home in some of my favorite conditions."

Saturday began with light wind that eventually filled in consistently from the South with excellent waves. The Bulldogs, who were familiar with these conditions, used their experience to their advantage. Catherine Mollerus '21 said, "Saturday started off slow going but it picked up progressively throughout the day and the waves grew as well. Our ability to handle the waves definitely set us apart from other teams." Klingler '20 also noted that the team focused on surfing the waves downwind.

Sunday offered less ideal conditions and races did not begin until the afternoon. Four races were sailed in each division after the wind stabilized. Mollerus '21 commented on the day, saying, "Sunday was much lighter from the North and was too unstable to sail until 12:30. After that our coach did a great job of getting four races off and the current was kind of tricky but good conditions overall."
