NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- While half of the team saw success up north in Boston, many of the Bulldog sprinters, jumpers, and throwers from the Yale women's track and field team remained in New Haven to compete in Yale's Giegengack Invitational. The meet, held on Saturday in Coxe Cage, included fellow Ivy Leaguers Brown and Dartmouth, in addition to Connecticut schools and out-of-state schools like Army.
Representing the Yale sprinters at home, Lauren Stavig and Ava Thomas began the afternoon both qualifying for the finals in the 60 meter dash. Thomas finished fifth in the finals, running 7.82 seconds, and also claimed a second-place finish in the 200 meters in a 25.71. First year Sydney McCord also had a strong showing in the 200 meters, running a 26.31 for a fourth-place finish and a time just a tenth of a second off her personal best.
Also in the 200 meter dash were long jumper Sydney Kunkler and high jumper Olivia Mooney. In the high jump, Mooney placed third and recorded a new personal best with a jump clearing 1.69 meters. She then traded in her high jump shoes for spikes and ran an impressive 27.15 in the 200 meters. Similarly, Kunkler recorded a personal best of 5.42 meters in the long jump to finish fourth before also joining Mooney on the track.
Emma Osborne also placed for Yale, finishing second behind Army's Hannah Blakey (58.29 seconds) in the 400 meters with a time of 59.07 seconds. Yale's Caroline Brashear also nabbed a second-place finish. Making her debut for the 800 meters, Brashear established herself early on and held strong as the field surged. In the longest event of the day, the one mile, cross country captain Lauren Chapey represented the Bulldogs. Chapey placed fourth in a hard-fought race, claiming a season's best time of 5:16.62. This performance is especially commendable, as Chapey has fought injuries throughout her career at Yale, and still bettered her time from last week by 10 seconds.
Continuing the trend of competing in off events, Erin Gerardo showed her versatility competing in the 60 meters hurdles after a second-place finish in the high jump. Gerardo and Davornne Lindo both qualified into the finals for the event and both bettered their times in from the preliminary round. Lindo crossed the line in the finals in 9.45 seconds, with Gerardo right behind in 9.50.
On the field, sophomore phenom Emma Vasen dominated the shot put, claiming first place over Dartmouth's Julianna Thomas by more than half a meter. Vasen also placed fourth in the weight throw ahead of multiple other Ivy League athletes. Alladia Patterson also recorded a strong finish to place sixth overall in the shot put out of 15 competitors.
