NEW HAVEN, Conn. – First-year
Constanza Acevedo (Colina, Chile) of the Yale women's track and field team has been named Ivy League Athlete of the Week. The league announced the honor on Tuesday.
Acevedo broke Yale's school record in the javelin throw Friday at UCF's Black and Gold Challenge in Florida. Acevedo's mark of 45.92m placed her third, trailing only Iowa's Lizzy Korczak (52.06m) and Michigan's Emma Yungeberg (48.12m) – both All-Americans.
Acevedo's mark bests the Yale record (1999-present) which had been set by
Natasha Bloom '00 in 1999 (41.61m). The pre-1999 school record is 47.17m, set by
Jamie Morris '89 in 1988. NCAA javelin records prior to 1999 are different and generally much longer than current records due to a mandatory redesign of the javelin implement by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), now World Athletics.
The Bulldogs compete again this week at the Raleigh Relays and the UMass Flagship First.
