Chau Named Academic All-District

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Sophomore Jocelyn Chau (Toronto, Ont.), one of the top middle distance runners for the Yale women's cross country and track and field teams, was honored for her academic work on Friday. She was named first team Academic All-District by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Chau was one of 13 honorees -- and one of only two sophomores -- in District 1, which includes all Division I schools in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont. The award is determined by voting from members of CoSIDA.

Chau has made an impact since arriving on campus, earning the Yale track and field team's Outstanding Middle Distance Runner award each of the last two years. In her first meet this season she set new personal bests in the 500 meters and 1,000 meters en route to winning the latter. She went on to finish third in the 1,000 at the Ivy League Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Chau holds the second-fastest time in the 1,000 and the fifth-fastest time in the 500 in Yale history indoors. She was a bronze medalist at the PanAm U20 Championships in the 1,500 and finished in ninth place at the IAAF World U20 Championships in the 1,500.

A graduate of De La Salle College, Chau is in Silliman College at Yale, is majoring in molecular biophysics and biochemistry and has served as a tutor. She is now a candidate for Academic All-America honors, which will be announced June 25.
