NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Three seniors on the Yale women's cross country team --
Kayley DeLay (Jacksonville Beach, Fla.),
Maddie Ghazarian (Cambridge, Ont.) and
Zoe Nuechterlein (Chevy Chase, Md.) -- have been named All-Region after their performances at the NCAA Northeast Regional this past Friday. The USTFCCCA announced the honors, which are awarded to runners who place in the top 25 at Regionals, on Monday.
Â
The trio had a remarkably consistent season, finishing as Yale's top three in every race they ran. They were a huge reason why Yale earned a fifth-place finish at Regionals, and earlier in the year they helped the Bulldogs to a big win at Virginia's XC23 Invitational.
Â
DeLay, who is headed to her home state of Florida to compete in the NCAA Championships this Saturday, placed second at the NCAA Northeast Regional with a time of 20:28. Earlier this season she repeated as Ivy League champion, earning first team All-Ivy League for the second time in her career. Her time of 20:08.8 at the Ivy League Heps Championships was the fastest time in Yale history at West Windsor Fields, and the second-fastest time by any Ivy League runner at Heps on that course.Â
Â
DeLay has been Yale's top finisher at each race she has run this fall, starting with a first-place overall finish at HYPs Sept. 11. She placed third overall at the Coast to Coast Battle in Beantown Sept. 24, then won the XC23 Invitational Oct. 15. She is Yale's captain.
Â
DeLay is a graduate of Fletcher High School. She is in Morse College at Yale.
Â
Ghazarian continued her inspiring season with a 22nd place finish (21:14) at Regionals. Earlier this fall she ran her first race in five years, finishing 10th overall at West Windsor Fields for HYPs. She had her best individual finish of the season (fifth) in helping the Bulldogs to a first-place finish at the XC23 Invitational Oct. 15. The Ivy League Heps Championships marked her first 6K as a Bulldog, and she finished 13th overall with a time of 21:06.4. She earned second team All-Ivy League honors for that performance.
Â
Ghazarian is a graduate of Preston High School. She is in Morse College at Yale.
Â
Nuechterlein completed her memorable senior season with a 24th place finish (21:15) at Regionals. She opened the fall with a seventh-place overall finish at HYPs, then had her best individual finish (third) at the XC23 Invitational. She took sixth at Heps with a time of 20:48.2. She thus earned first team All-Ivy, the first such honor of her career.Â
Â
Nuechterlein is a graduate of Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School. She is in Grace Hopper College at Yale.
