NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Ivy League games are going to come fast and furious for the Yale men's basketball team over the next few weeks. Next up is a visit from Columbia on Tuesday night. Tipoff at the John J. Lee Amphitheater is slated for 7 p.m. ESPN+ will have the stream of the game, which was originally scheduled as the Ivy opener for both teams back on Jan. 2 but was postponed.

The Bulldogs (8-9, 2-1 Ivy) are coming off a hard-fought 76-68 loss to Penn at the Palestra on Saturday, despite a 21-point performance from Jalen Gabbidon. Isaiah Kelly added a career-high 11 rebounds, and Matt Knowling continued his strong play with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field. Knowling has scored in double figures in three of the last four games and is averaging 12.7 points, while shooting .667 (14-of-21) from the field in three league games.

Yale continues to lead the league in field goal percentage defense (.418) and three-point field goal percentage defense (.308). The Quakers were just 5-of-26 from beyond the arc on Saturday, and the Bulldogs' three Ivy opponents have shot a combined 15-of-69 (.217) from long range. Yale's defense will get tested by a Columbia team that has a .375 three-point field goal percentage which is second in the league.

Azar Swain leads the Bulldogs in scoring at 18.7 ppg., which ties him with Penn's Jordan Dingle for the league lead. Swain also tops Yale with 33 assists. Gabbidon (11.1 ppg.) is the Bulldogs' other double figure scorer.

Yale is playing its second Ivy game in the friendly confines of Lee Amphitheater. The Bulldogs cruised to a 96-69 win over Cornell on Jan. 15. Over the last five seasons, Yale is 30-6 in league games in the historic arena, including the two victories in the 2019 Ivy League Tournament.

Yale has been successful everywhere in Ivy play recently. Over the last 6+ seasons, the Bulldogs have a remarkable 65-22 Ivy record. During that stretch, they have won four league titles and earned three NCAA Tournament berths, including notching the first NCAA victory in school history.

HISTORY LESSONS

Yale has won 10 of the last 12 games with Columbia at Lee Amphitheater, including a 93-62 victory in 2020. Matthue Cotton (20) and Swain (16) combined for 36 points in that victory. The Bulldogs are 9-1 in their last 10 games with the Lions overall. Columbia, though, leads the all-time series 126-113. The first meeting came in 1902, a 48-3 Yale victory in New Haven.

SCOUTING COLUMBIA

The Lions (4-12, 1-3 Ivy) are coming off a 93-74 home loss to Brown on Saturday. Ike Nweke scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds to pace Columbia. Nweke, who missed much of the non-conference schedule, is off to a strong start in Ivy play. He is averaging 19.7 points and 9.7 rebounds in three league games. Geronimo Rubio De La Rosa (12.1 ppg.) and Liam Murphy (12.0 ppg.) average double figures overall. There will be a familiar face on the Columbia sideline. Tobe Carberry, who spent three seasons as a member of James Jones' staff at Yale, is an assistant coach for the Lions.
