Â
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – March is here, and the Yale men's basketball team hopes the madness will follow. The Bulldogs close out the regular season by hosting Brown on Saturday night. Tipoff at the John J. Lee Amphitheater is slated for 7 p.m. ESPN+ will stream the game live.
Â
Yale (16-11, 10-3 Ivy) has already clinched its spot in the Ivy League Tournament, but there is still much at stake in the final weekend. The Bulldogs enter one game behind first-place Princeton, and a victory over Brown coupled with a Princeton loss at Penn would earn Yale its third straight Ivy regular season title.
Â
There also is the matter of honoring four seniors -
Jameel Alausa, Eze Dike, Jalen Gabbidon and
Azar Swain - who have played key roles in all that success. Over the last four seasons, the Bulldogs have won 77 games, including 40 in Ivy League play, captured two Ivy League championships and earned two NCAA Tournament bids.
Â
Alausa has been limited by injury this year but has still provided outstanding leadership and support. In 2019-20, he shot 51 percent from the field and was the recipient of the team's Bill Madden Toughness Award. In his career, he has appeared in 49 games, including 24 in the 2019-20 championship season.
Â
Dike has been a consistent contributor to Yale's backcourt throughout his career, appearing in 46 games. Earlier this season, he was named to the all-tournament team at the Fort Myers Tip Off Classic. In the 2019-20 championship season, he appeared in a career-high 20 games.
Â
Gabbidon was the 2020 Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year. This season he is among the league leaders in free throw percentage, field goal percentage and steals. In a victory over Penn two weeks ago, he scored a career-high 32 points. Over the last two seasons he has started 56 games, and in his career, he has scored more than 500 points and grabbed more than 200 rebounds.
Â
Swain is Yale's all-time leader with 258 career three-pointers and has scored 1,428 career points, the eighth most in school history. This season, he is second in the Ivy League in scoring and among the national leaders in free throw percentage. Against Columbia he scored 37 points, the most by a Bulldog in
James Jones' tenure as head coach, and in January was named to the Watch List for the CollegeInsider Lou Henson Award, presented to the top mid-major player in the nation. In 2019-20, he was a first team All-Ivy selection and set a school record with 93 three-pointers.
