BOSTON -- Following the annual Ivy League Heptagonal Championships last weekend, several members of the Yale women's track and field team traveled up to Boston for the ECAC Championships this weekend with a final shot at the record books on their mind. Seniors
Addison Coy and
Libby McMahon left for Boston University determined to grab a spot in the record books in their final indoor meet as Bulldogs, and they did not disappoint.
McMahon solidified herself as one of the greatest sprinters in Yale history by breaking Yale's 400m record in her second 400m dash of the year. Her time of 54.29s in Saturday's prelims would have been fast enough to win the Ivy Championships last weekend. McMahon now holds three different Yale records, the most of anyone currently in the record book. McMahon also has Yale's second-fastest performance in the 60m dash, further adding to her merit as one of the best and most versatile ever to do it.
In the 500m dash prelims Coy won her heat in dominating fashion, finishing well over a second faster than the next competitor. Her time of 1:12.96 is a Yale record and would have placed her second in last weekend's conference championships. Coy is also a member of the school record-setting 4x400m relay team with McMahon. Coy took a year off so she would have the opportunity to compete in her final season and it has definitely paid off.
Both Coy and McMahon will be running again Sunday as the second-fastest qualifier in their respective events.
The only other Bulldog to qualify for Sunday's finals is senior
Samantha Friborg, who set a new personal record in the 800m run with a time of 2:07.41. Due to the fast nature of Boston University's track and her ability to continuously improve, Friborg has a genuine chance to break the school record in the finals Sunday.
