NEW HAVEN, Conn. – One thing seems clear as the Ivy League softball season reaches the midway point. The race for the two spots in the league's playoff series is going to be exciting. All eight teams are within three games of each other with about a month to go.

Yale will look to improve its positioning during a three-game series at Columbia this weekend. The teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday with the first pitch each day slated for 12:30 p.m. Both the Bulldogs and Lions are 4-5 in Ivy play, two games behind Princeton and Harvard, who share the lead at 6-3.

Yale features the Ivy League's leading hitter in Sam Goodcase, who boasts a .414 overall batting average. Goodcase has been even better in the nine Ivy games when she is hitting .458 with two home runs and five RBI. Last Saturday against Brown, she belted the first pitch she saw in the eighth inning over the left-field fence to lift the Bulldogs to a thrilling 4-3 victory in the first game of the series.

Carolyn Skotz (.348) and Maddie Latta (.345, 3 home runs) also impressive statistics in Ivy games. Skotz has reached base in each of her last nine games, while Sophie Woodridge has reached base in her last six games.

Yale has outhomered its Ivy opponents 11-8.

SCOUTING COLUMBIA

The Lions, the Ivy League preseason favorite, was swept in a three-game series with Harvard last weekend. Abby Stuart is second in the league with six home runs and tied for second with 17 RBIs. Columbia has outhomered its opponents 15-12 on the season. Jordan Hill leads the Lions' pitching staff in ERA (3.24) and strikeouts (42).

WHAT'S NEXT

The Bulldogs begin a seven-game homestand by playing a single game with Hartford on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at 5K Corral Field at DeWitt Family Stadium.
