NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Juma Sei (Portland, Ore.), captain of the Yale men's track and field team has been named Academic All-Ivy League for the 2022 outdoor season. The league announced the honor Tuesday.

This is the latest recognition for Sei, an American studies major. Last month he received the Yale Athletic Department's Thomas W. Ford '42 Student-Athlete Community Outreach Award, awarded to one female sport participant and one male sport participant who during the past four years has demonstrated their commitment to strengthening the relationship between Yale Athletics and the youth in the New Haven community.
 
Sei has dedicated his time to a number of educational and social justice initiatives. He is part of the Jane Matilda Bolin Program, coordinating a weekly three-hour Africana Studies seminar for 15 high school students and teaching a self-curated curriculum. He is part of the Urban Improvement Corps, co-directing and teaching a weekly one-hour creative writing seminar for a group of seven middle and high school students. He mentors and tutors a middle school student, working through an individualized learning curriculum in weekly 1.5 hour tutoring sessions. He also was part of the Yale Education Tutoring Initiative, hosting weekly one-hour study halls for middle and high school students to maintain academic support in the spring 2020 transition to online learning.

Sei has served as secretary of the Yale Black Men's Union and as a peer liaison for Yale's Afro-American Cultural Center. He is a leader on the Yale Bulldogs for Change Cultural Center Connection Committee. He is a First-Year Counselor for his residential college, Ezra Stiles. Last year he earned Yale's F. Wilder Bellamy Jr. Memorial Prize for Ezra Stiles. Selected by the Council of the Heads of Colleges, the prize is awarded to juniors who best exemplify the qualities for which F. Wilder Bellamy, Jr. is remembered, including personal integrity; loyalty to friends; and high-spiritedness in athletics, academics and social life.
 
Sei, who was the Ivy League and IC4A 500m champion indoors, has enjoyed a successful outdoor season that included a fourth-place finish at the Ivy League Championships this past weekend with a time that places him 10th on Yale's all-time list (47.42s).

A graduate of Catlin Gabel School, Sei is a Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholar. He was selected from a nationwide pool of applicants by the foundation established in memory of the pioneering Major League Baseball Hall of Famer.
