Game Notes

NEW HAVEN, Conn. –
For the first time ever, Yale University and Saint Joseph's will play a men's lacrosse game and do so on a grand stage as the No. 4 overall seeded Bulldogs host the Hawks on Saturday, May 14 at 5 p.m., inside Reese Stadium on ESPNU. Chris Cotter and Paul Carcaterra will be on the call.

The Bulldogs enter the NCAA Tournament for the sixth-straight season and are coming off a National Championship in 2018 and an NCAA title game appearance in 2019. The 2020 and 2021 seasons were truncated and then canceled due to the worldwide pandemic.

The Elis returned as strong as ever with a No. 6 national ranking, a share of the Ivy League Regular Season Championship, their first since the 2018 season and now the No. 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Yale stands at 11-4 overall with nationally-ranked wins over No. 20 Villanova (17-14), No. 3 Princeton (14-12), No. 5 Penn (12-11 OT), No. 13 Boston U. (22-15), No. 15 Harvard (17-16 OT) and No. 8 Cornell (14-11). The Bulldogs are the only program to make all 10 Ivy League Tournaments and have reached the title game in each of the past six seasons.

Forst Family Head Coach of Men's Lacrosse, Andy Shay, became the program's winningest coach with the Ivy Semifinal victory over Cornell to reach 167 career victories for the Bulldogs, passing longtime coach Mike Waldvogel (1981-2002).

The Bulldogs have been led this season by USA Lacrosse Magazine All-Americans Matt Brandau (First Team) and Chris Fake (Honorable Mention). They were two of six Bulldogs to earn All-Ivy honors and were joined by captain Brian Tevlin as First Team honorees.

While those three upperclassmen have led the charge, the Bulldogs are the nation's youngest team with 14 underclassmen in the rotation and 91 goals scored by first-year Elis, the most in the country.

About St. Joe's
The Hawks make their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance after compiling a 14-3 overall record and earning an AQ by winning the NEC Championship title with a 14-7 win over Hobart.

11th-year head coach and NEC Coach of the Year Tyler Wray has nine all-conference performers led by NEC Player of the Year Zach Cole, who leads the nation with a .689 winning percentage in the faceoff circle and 11.19 groundballs per game.

The Bulldogs and Hawks have two common opponents this season: Penn State and Penn. SJU won at home vs.  PSU, 15-13, while Yale was edged on the road, 10-6. St. Joe's took Penn to overtime on the road but fell 13-12 while the Bulldogs split two games against the Quakers.

Up Next
The winner of Saturday's game will face the victor of No. 5 Princeton and Boston U. in the NCAA Quarterfinals next Saturday, May 21, in Hempstead, N.Y., live on ESPNU.
