BOSTON -- A number of Yale's men's track and field team athletes competed in Sunday's IC4A Championships at BU, as finalists who had qualified the previous day were joined by athletes competing in the 3k, the shot put and the distance medley relay.
Â
One of the highlights of the day was
Chris Ward's second-place finish in the shot put, where he threw a PR of 17.15m. This marks the end of a season packed with improvement. Before this year, sophomore Ward had not yet surpassed the 16m barrier, but with a breakout performance at February's Crimson Elite, and now a further improvement on his personal best, he has quickly emerged as one of the Ivy League's top shot putters.Â
Â
Simon Jupp was also an IC4A medalist as he ran an improvement on his prelim time, placing second with a time of 1:04.16. Only last week at the Ivy League Championships Jupp showcased his speed with a 48-second 4x400m leg (run on a flat 200m track), so he looks perfectly set up to have a positive outdoor season and continue to be a consistent member of Yale's relay squad.
Â
In the 1000m,
Austin Montini made it two PRs in two days as he ran a time of 2:24.75. He ran a relatively more balanced race compared to Saturday, running a second slower through the 800m mark, but then finishing like a freight train to overtake a couple of athletes and make this a weekend to remember.
Â
The distance team were represented by two athletes in the mile final as
Winslow Atkeson and
Liam Garrett each consolidated their times from yesterday's heats.
Braden King and
Martin Riddell additionally had strong showings in the 3000m event.
Â
Although the distance medley relay may have fallen short of their initial school-record goal, they ran an impressive time of 9.50.67 and placed second overall in the competition. Promisingly, each member of the competing team (
Calvin Katz, Andrew Farr, Montini and
Leo Brewer) is a returner next year, and so expect the DMR record to be under threat again next indoor season.Â
Â
Overall, this was a positive day for the Yale team, and this will build some confidence going into a month of outdoor season preparation.
