STORRS, Conn. -- The Yale men's track and field picked up where they left off on day two of the UConn Northeast Challenge on Saturday, with multiple PRs and season's bests across both the track and field events.
Leading the charge for the Bulldogs was junior
Chris Ward in the shot put, where he warded off the competition to secure a dominant victory thanks to his 17.49m PR throw. Ward's first collegiate victory is testament to the hours of hard work he has put in over the past year, in which he has improved his PR by almost three and a half meters. If he can continue on this trajectory, Ward will no doubt turn some heads at the fast-approaching Ivy League Heptagonal Championships.
The victories didn't just stop there, however. Sophomore
Austin Montini had earlier powered to victory in his heat of the 1500m, deploying his customary lightning fast finish to out-kick his opponents on his way to a season's best 3:53.17. Montini looks to be trending in the right direction as the Bulldogs head towards the sharp end of this outdoor season. As do his two junior 800m teammates,
Drake Prince and
Thomas Cirrito, who both dipped under the 1:50 mark with times of 1:49.66 and 1:49.90 respectively. They finished second and third as they both ran their second-fastest ever times. Close behind in a second-fastest ever time of his own was sophomore
Calvin Katz in 1:52.16. Saturday's results are just a glimpse of the incredible increase in standards of 800m running that Yale has undergone in the past year. All four of the aforementioned athletes will be licking their lips at the prospect of the 4x800m relay at Heps next month.
There were yet more PRs in store for the Bulldogs over the sprint events. Senior
Justin Yazdi showed why you should always dip at the line as he dipped under 11 seconds to PR with a phenomenal 10.99 clocking. Sophomore
Simon Jupp also PR'd in the 200m with his 22.52 finish, just behind senior
Jeamy Williams in 22.25. Over the 400m, sophomore
Colin Quinn continued his progression back from injury with an encouraging 50.16 season's best. The trio of Jupp, Williams and Quinn later combined with first year
Andrew Farr in the 4x400m relay as they ran 3:20.60.
Next up for the Bulldogs is the Virginia Challenge on Apr. 20 and 21.
