WEST WINDSOR, N.J. — This Friday morning Yale raced in preliminary heats in the varsity and second varsity lightweight eights at the IRA National Championships in West Windsor, N.J. With the varsity's finish, both crews will race in Sunday grand finals and compete for national titles.
At 8:00 a.m., the Yale 2V locked into their stakeboat from lane 6 against Dartmouth, Harvard, Princeton, Cornell, Penn and Navy. Through the first 500m, Yale remained deadlocked with Cornell and Princeton, as the three crews began to separate themselves from the field while vying for the lead. Through the midway point, Princeton emerged as the leader with the Bulldogs staying close in second and Cornell in third. The order would remain to shape out the finish, followed by Penn, Harvard, Navy and then Dartmouth. The Yale 2V is now seeded No. 2 and will contend for the title of top second varsity lightweight eight in the nation against the same field in Sunday's grand final, which is set to commence at 9:30 a.m.
At 9:00 a.m., the Yale varsity eight locked into their stakeboat from lane 3 against Harvard, Navy and Dartmouth. Despite early troubles, the Blue displayed tremendous resilience throughout the middle 1000m to stay in the fight, and in the final 500 meters Yale surged to overtake Dartmouth and finish third, earning a spot in the grand final. With their advancement, the Bulldogs now have the opportunity to be crowned the top lightweight crew in the nation. On Sunday at 10:20 a.m., Yale will race against Harvard, Navy, Princeton, Penn and Cornell.
