WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – This Sunday, the Yale lightweight varsity and second varsity eights competed in the grand finals of the IRA National Championship.
At 9:12 a.m., the Yale 2V locked into their stakeboat from lane five to take on Princeton, Harvard, Navy, Cornell, Penn and Dartmouth for the chance to be named the top second varsity lightweight eight in the nation. The first 500m yielded a tight field, with all crews remaining within a half-length of the leader Princeton. Despite struggles in the first half, the Bulldogs surged in the latter 1000m of the race to move from seventh to third, nearly overtaking Harvard for silver in the dying meters of the race before ultimately running out of room. Meanwhile, Princeton took home gold, rounding out an HYP podium.
At 9:52 a.m., the Yale 1V lined up from lane two for the lightweight eight national title grand final. The Bulldogs finished as the sixth best lightweight crew in the nation, with Penn earning bronze, Harvard earning silver, and Princeton winning gold.
