Last Week
Yale (1-1, 0-0 Ivy League) split a pair of games last week, rallying from a 12 point deficit to
beat Monmouth 64-61 in the season opener Nov. 4 but
falling at Michigan State 100-44 on Friday.
Strong Start for Egger
Senior guard/forward
Mackenzie Egger (Mount Pleasant, Mich.), who returned to her home state for the game at Michigan State this past Friday, is off to a strong start. She leads the Bulldogs in scoring (16.5 points per game), including a career-high 25 points in the season opener. That total is tied for the second-most points in a game by an Ivy League player this year. She is second on the team in rebounding (9.5 rebounds per game), having tied her career high with 10 rebounds in the game at Michigan State.
First Years Provide Scoring Punch
The first-year class has provided the bulk of Yale's scoring in the early going. Here is a breakdown:
- Seniors: 42 points
- Juniors: 9 points
- Sophomores: 9 points
- First years: 47 points
Bulldog Debuts
The first two games of the season have seen six players make their Yale debuts:
- First-year guard Marisa Chapman (Middletown, N.Y.) has started the first two games and is averaging 11.5 points per game (second on the team) and 10.5 rebounds per game (best on the team). Her 12 rebounds in the win vs. Monmouth are tied for third-most in a game by an Ivy League player this season.
- Sophomore forward Ana Guillen (Badalona, Spain), a transfer from Wisconsin, has appeared in both games and totaled eight points and five rebounds.
- First-year guard Abigail Long (Mission Hills, Kan.) made her Yale debut at Michigan State Friday and hit a pair of three-pointers.
- First-year guard Ciniya Moore (Bradenton, Fla.) has appeared in two games and totaled 14 minutes.
- First-year guard Ke'iara Odume (Syracuse, N.Y.) has appeared in two games and is third on the team in scoring (8.0 points per game).
- First-year guard Magdalena Schmidt (Gmunden, Austria) made her Yale debut at Michigan State and hit a three-pointer.
New York Bulldogs
Tuesday marks the first of five games Yale is scheduled to play in the state of New York this season. Three Bulldogs are natives of the Empire State:
Yale's Dalila Eshe (right) and
Hofstra's Danielle Santos Atkinson (second from left)
in the 2005-06 Florida media guide.
Friends and Foes
Tuesday's game will feature two head coaches who played together at the University of Florida.
Dalila Eshe, who is in her third season as Yale's Joel E. Smilow, Class of 1954 Head Coach of Women's Basketball, was a teammate of Hofstra's Danielle Santos Atkinson, who is in her sixth season as Hofstra's head coach.
Eshe and Santos Atkinson graduated in 2006, having been part of a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances under head coach Carolyn Peck. Eshe earned first team All-SEC honors as a senior, leading the Gators with 14.2 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. She was selected 25th overall in the WNBA Draft by the Seattle Storm. Santos Atkinson ranks in the top 20 all-time at Florida in assists and three-pointers.
Scouting Hofstra
Hofstra (1-1, 0-0 CAA) is coming off a 74-69 win at NJIT. This is the first meeting between Yale and Hofstra since a
73-67 Bulldog win at Lee Amphitheater on Dec. 11, 2007. The Pride went 11-21 last season, averaging 56.6 points per game.
Scouting Stony Brook
Stony Brook (1-1, 0-0 CAA) will have had more than a week off by the time the Seawolves and Bulldogs tip off at Lee Amphitheater Friday. They last played on Nov. 7, beating Le Moyne 53-43. SBU has already lost to one Ivy League opponent, falling to Columbia 87-47 in the season opener. The Seawolves are in their first year under head coach Joy McCorvey, after Ashley Langford led them to a 28-5 record last season (advancing to the second round of the WBIT) before moving on to Tulane.
