NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior
Owen Karas added an exclamation mark to the first weekend of indoor competition for the Yale men's track and field team Saturday night, posting a time of 13:53.27 to set the school record in the 5K at BU's Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener. Karas' time was nearly six seconds faster than the previous Yale record of 13:59.06, set by
Kevin Dooney '16 in 2014.
Meanwhile back at home earlier Saturday, the rest of the team brought Coxe Cage alive for the first time this season, and the energy and passion were clear for all to see -- along with the PRs.

- Junior Owen Karas, competing in heat seven of the 5K, started his season in record-breaking fashion. In winning his heat by 1.18 seconds over Emmanuel Leblond of Johns Hopkins, Karas finished in 13:53.27 to set the school record. His final lap (31.34) was his fastest, and his next-to-last lap (32.12) was his third-fastest.

- The day kicked off for the Bulldogs with sophomore Jamaal Darlington in the high jump. He set the tone for the day with a strong PR of 1.93m to place first.
- The throwers were back in action after a great day Friday at UConn. Juniors Nolan Recker and Jake Sun placed first and second in the weight throw, throwing 19.81 and 17.18 meters respectively. This was a very solid opening weekend for the pair and bodes well for the future. Sophomore Chu Anueyiagu placed fourth with a solid distance of 16.14 meters in his opening attempt.
- In the long jump Isiah Udofia began his season well, placing first with a distance of 7.22 meters. This convincing win sets him up well for the future. Elsewhere in the jumps, junior Brian Di Bassinga and first year Orion Browne pushed each other to the limit in the triple jump. Browne placed first with a mark of 14.37 meters and Di Bassinga was narrowly behind with 14.17 meters.
- In the mile first year Max Bishop had an excellent debut in the event, running 4:13 to place first. The 1000 meters was an excellent event. Sophomore Brian Gamble won his heat in 2:26 closely followed by senior Austin Montini. In the second heat sophomore Liam Sullivan also placed first, running a PR of 2:34.
- The 60 meter runners put on a show. In qualifying junior Andrew Farr was the fastest, running a PR of 6.89. Senior Kit Colson, senior Cristian Pereira, sophomore Andrew Fu, sophomore Lucas Mylon and senior Simon Jupp also all qualified for the final, all breaking the 7 second barrier. In the final it was Colson who placed first in 6.831 with Farr running another PR of 6.834 to narrowly place second. Mylon placed fourth, running a PR of 6.92. These are fast times for a season opener, and many will be hoping to run quicker after the break.
- The Bulldogs opened up strongly in the 400 meters. First year Otis Irwin placed first in his heat with a time of 48.71. Narrowly behind was Mylon in 48.84. Sophomore Antonio Bravo placed first in his heat with a PR of 50.45.
- In the 200 meters captain Jacob Kao had an excellent opener, running 21.70 to place first. Closely behind was Udofia, who ran 21.84 to place second.
- The 3,000 meters was an exciting race with sophomore Guy Stevens running strong to place first with a time of 8:20.
- The 4x400 meter relay is always an exiting end to the day. The Bulldogs' team of Farr, Jupp, Bravo and Montini finished the day off well, placing first with a time of 3:20.

- The Bulldogs head home shortly for a well-deserved winter break. However, training will continue as the season kicks off in earnest after the break. The Bulldogs will be back in action on Jan. 18 for the Yale-Dartmouth-Columbia tri meet that takes place at the Leverone Field House at Dartmouth.
