IVY CHAMPS! Bulldogs Win 2024 Ivy Title; Carpenter Earns Medalist Honors

WATCHUNG, N.J. – The Yale men's golf team captured the 2024 Ivy League Men's Golf Championship at the Watchung Valley Golf Club. Junior Ben Carpenter finished as the tournament's top finisher, earning medalist honors.

This is the Bulldogs' 12th team championship in the program's history, second in the last three years, and the fourth in the last decade. Carpenter earned the second medalist honor of his career at the Ivy Championships after winning the honor in 2022, the same year Yale won its last team title. Carpenter shot a 204, nine under par, this year compared to his 211 finish in 2022.

Coach's Reflection
This season marks the first Ivy title for head coach Keith Tyburski, who is in his first season after taking over the program in summer 2023. "I am extremely proud of our guys this week. We had been struggling to play well in the final rounds of tournaments all year and made it a goal this week to change that," said Tyburski. "We knew we had to make a move early. Ben [Carpenter] and Sam [Davis] came out on fire, and we closed the gap. From there, it was a fight. We played smart and disciplined, right until the very end."

Points of History
This is the 16th time a Yale men's golfer has been the tournament's medalist since the development of the Ivy League Men's Golf Championship in 1975. Carpenter is also the eighth men's golfer in Ivy history to earn medalist honors twice and just the third Yale golfer next to Peter Teraveinen (1977, 1978) and Bob Heintz (1990, 1991, 1992).

Turning Points
  • Yale was down by five strokes behind Princeton, the reigning Ivy Champions, at the conclusion of day two.
  • After shooting 286 and 282 in the first two rounds, the Bulldogs' best came in the final day after they shot a solid 275.
  • Two major plays on hole 18 stood out the most for the Bulldogs as both Sam Davis and Gabriel Ruiz made clutch putts that helped secure the win. Davis had bogeyed on hole 16 and 17 before heading into the 18th hole. "The putt from above the hold was very tough, but he nailed it dead center," said Tyburski of Davis' putt.
  • When Ruiz was approaching hole 18, the Bulldogs knew it was a footrace to the finish. "We had a great discussion and agree on the line it needed to take. He gauged the speed perfectly and was the epitome of leading by example, making a huge putt when we needed it," Tyburski said in closing. Ruiz went on to sink a 30-foot eagle putt from the fringe.
