Karas Sets 3,000 Meter School Record; Bulldogs Compete at Two Meets

BOSTON and STORRS, Conn. – The Yale men's track and field team had a successful and busy Saturday, highlighted by a school record in the 3k by Owen Karas. There were also top 10 school marks and numerous PRs across two meets as the Bulldogs competed at the BU John Thomas Terrier Classic and UConn's Coach Greg Roy-al Rumble. The momentum is building for the Bulldogs as the championship season approaches.

  • Junior Owen Karas set the track alight in the 3k, establishing a new school record of 7:51.68. He bested the previous mark set by Robert Miranda '22 in 2022. Karas closed well to beat the previous record by .23.
  • First years Keeran Murray and Max Bishop both raced in the 1k. Murray ran a new PR of 2:24.66 to rank 10th all-time at Yale. Bishop was just behind in 2:25.15.
  • In the mile Leo Brewer moved up well throughout his heat to place fifth in 4:04. Sophomore Brian Gamble also fought well to come home in 4:06, just outside a PR.
  • There were mutiple Bulldogs in the 3k. Senior Varun Oberai battled well early on putting himself in a strong position; he finished in 8:19.94. Going in the next heat, Jack Sendek and Lucas Cohen worked well together with Sendek running 8:24 and Cohen just behind in 8:26.
  • The final event of the day was the 5k. Junior Kenan Pala put it all out on the track, spending much of the early part of the race up near the lead before ultimately finishing in 14:29.40. In the next heat, Daegan Cutter had a good battle to come home in a new PR of 14:17.

  • The day kicked off with the 60m. Sophomore Andrew Fu ran well in the prelims to qualify for the final with a time of 7.06. Fu backed this up with a 7.11 clocking in the final.
  • Sophomore Antonio Bravo doubled up in the 600 and 300 meters. He fought well in what was a busy day.
  • In the jumps, senior Elliot Wessel set a season's best of 4.35 meters to place seventh overall.
  • The throwers had a successful day in the weight throw. Senior Nolan Recker placed second with a mark of 20.42, just outside his PR. Closely behind was Jake Sun in fourth and Nathan Lebowitz in sixth with a new PR of 17.25.  
 
Up Next:
  • The Bulldogs are back in action next weekend with another double-meet weekend. The Crimson Elite takes place at Harvard on Feb. 7. Many of the sprinters, jumpers and throwers will test their limits at this meet. The distance squad will head back to BU for the Bruce Lehane Scarlet and White Invite that takes place Feb. 8.
