NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The NCAA Men's and Women's Fencing Committee announced the field of 144 competitors who will participate in the 2025 National Collegiate Men's and Women's Fencing Championships on Tuesday, Mar 11. Thirty-three member institutions will be represented at this year's fencing championships. Six Bulldogs qualified for the championship event.
On the men's side, junior
Tony Whelan (men's epee), sophomore
Jordan Silberzweig (men's saber), and first year
Castor Kao (men's foil) were announced as participants. Silberzweig, the 2024 Ivy League Champion in saber, received All-American honors last season after placing fifth at the NCAA Championships as a first year. This is the second consecutive year that Whelan qualified for nationals, after placing 19th overall in epee in 2024.
Sophomore
Michelle Lee (women's epee) and first years
Anya Mehrotra (women's epee) and
Audrey Lin (women's saber) were the Yale qualifiers on the women's side. All three will be making their first appearances at the national championship event.
The National Collegiate Men's and Women's Fencing Championships include individual events in each of six weapons (men's epee, men's foil, men's saber, women's epee, women's foil and women's saber).
Fencers will compete in a round-robin format of five-touch bouts. After round robin, the top-four finishers in each weapon will fence in semifinal 15-touch bouts, with winners fencing to determine first and second places, and non-advancing fencers being awarded a tie for third place.
An institution's place finish in the championships will be based on points earned by each individual. A team will be awarded one point for each victory by its student-athletes during round-robin competition.
The 2025 NC fencing championships will be from March 20-23 and held at the Multi-Sport Facility in University Park, PA on the campus of Penn State.
