PRINCETON, N.J. – Overcast skies and a building tailwind greeted crews on Saturday morning as they prepared for the 103rd running of the HYP regatta—the historic annual matchup between fierce Ivy League rivals Yale, Harvard and Princeton. Last year, on home waters, the Bulldogs won the Vogel Cup for team points, while Harvard won the Goldthwait Cup for its victory in the varsity eight race. This time around, however, Harvard claimed both Cups with its victories in the 1V, 2V and 4V 4+, and its second-place finish in the 3V.
- The Yale lightweights began their morning with the third varsity eight event. Out of the stake boats, Princeton secured a quick lead, with Yale and Harvard trailing behind. Through the second 500 meters, Princeton maintained about a length on Harvard, with Yale fighting to hold on to the Crimson. In the latter half of the race, Princeton and Harvard pulled away, with the Tigers claiming first and the Bulldogs ultimately finishing third.
- Next up on the schedule was the junior varsity race. Within the first few dozen strokes, Harvard jumped out ahead, largely maintaining their lead on the field for the entirety of the race. Yale and Princeton followed closely behind in a battle that rarely saw more than three seats' worth of margin between the two crews. Through the latter 1,000 meters, the Bulldogs went stroke-for-stroke with the Tigers, eventually taking a few seats on Princeton, with that lead remaining relatively constant up until the final stretch of the course. In the last 500 meters, both crews upped their stroke rates for bold sprints, but by the finish line, Yale had edged out Princeton, finishing just behind Harvard.
- The much anticipated varsity eight race closed out the morning's slate of classic Ivy League lightweight rowing. All crews started off hot, remaining relatively even through the first 200 meters. Harvard then settled into a strong base rhythm, gradually pulling ahead of the field. About a length behind the Crimson, the Yale and Princeton crews battled for every meter, with Princeton starting to slide away in the middle 1,000 meters. In the second half of the race, the Bulldogs made strong moves to keep contact with Princeton, pushing hard through the sprint but eventually finishing third.
The Elis will return to Gilder Boathouse to train for the Eastern Sprints Championship, which will be held on May 18 in Worcester, Mass.
