NEW HAVEN, Conn. – This summer, the Bulldogs are taking a break from the books and are embarking on experiences away from the Yale campus. Check in with some members of the Yale softball team and see how they are spending their summer break.

This week, hear from rising sophomore Caitlin LaFerney to see what she is up to!

Hello! My name is Caitlin LaFerney and I am a sophomore pitcher from Yorktown, Indiana. I am majoring in Political Science and the History of Science, Medicine, and Public Health (HSHM). Outside of school and softball, I am a part of Alpha Phi and a Camp Kesem Counselor. 

At the beginning of summer, I spent some time at home in Indiana, working at my local ice cream shop and hanging out with family and friends. Notably, I got to spend some time with Yale Softball Alum Hannah Turner. We played pickleball and explored my hometown! 

Since the beginning of June, I have been studying abroad in Iceland with a group of 23 students from colleges all over the nation. I have been exploring and learning as much as I can about Iceland's sustainable energy practices. We have visited many geothermal power and hydropower plants, as well as heard from many speakers about their own startups that are aimed at a more sustainable future. 

We started in Reykavík, moved to our current location of Akureyri, and we will end our time abroad in Ísafjörður. Outside of class, we've also taken multiple day trips to places like Fidey Island, the Westman Islands, as well as glacier hikes and whale watching! 

I have had an amazing time while abroad! I am looking forward to visiting junior pitcher Meredith Henderson in Cambridge after my program ends, before heading back home to Indiana! I will then have three weeks before I head back to campus a little early to be a Camp Kesem counselor. I am so excited for year two, and I cannot wait to get back to work with the team!
