Shay Leads U.S. Team to Pan-American Sixes Lacrosse Championship

OSHAWA, Ontario – Andy Shay, the Forst Family Head Coach of Men's Lacrosse, made his mark on the international stage this past weekend, leading the U.S. to a thrilling 12-11 victory over Canada at the Pan-American Sixes Lacrosse Championship on Sunday. Additionally, Yale alum Tony Resch '85 was part of the U.S. coaching staff, serving as an assistant coach.

The win for the U.S. was its first over Canada in the sixes discipline since 2021.

The event was a continental qualifier for the World Lacrosse Sixes Championships, which will be held in October 2027 in Colorado Springs. The top five teams from the Pan-American Championship will qualify for next year's world championship.

Canada took an 11-10 lead with 1:55 to play. After the teams traded empty possessions, Canada had a breakaway with under a minute remaining and a chance to go up by two and put the game away.

Liam Entenmann, the U.S. goalkeeper, then made a big save, and the U.S. took the ball back the other way and scored the game-tying goal. A delayed penalty following the Entenmann save gave the U.S. the ball on an extra-man opportunity. Shay and the team called timeout to set up the final play, and Pat Kavanagh buried an outside shot from out front with just 1.5 seconds left to seal the victory.

The sensational result capped all the work Shay and the team put in after spending three days in Buffalo for a training camp with 24 players before bringing 12 of them over the border to compete in the continental qualifier.

Next up for the Sixes is the Atlas Cup from Oct. 23-25, 2026, in Sparks, Maryland.
