ORLANDO, Fla. – First-year
Constanza Acevedo broke the school record in the javelin throw Friday as the Yale women's track and field team opened competition at UCF's Black and Gold Challenge in Florida. Acevedo's mark of 45.92m placed her third, trailing only Iowa's Lizzy Korczak (52.06m) and Michigan's Emma Yungeberg (48.12m), who was competing unattached. Both Korczak and Yungeberg are seniors who have earned second team All-America recognition in previous years.
Acevedo's mark bests the Yale record (1999-present) that had been set by
Natasha Bloom '00 in 1999 (41.61m). The pre-1999 school record is 47.17m, set by
Jamie Morris '89 in 1988. NCAA javelin records prior to 1999 are different and generally much longer than current records due to a mandatory redesign of the javelin implement by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), now World Athletics.
Yale also got a standout performance from junior
Gloria Guerrier on Friday, as she finished fourth in the 400m hurdles (1:00.51). That was less than two seconds away from her PR of 59.02, which ranks third all-time at Yale. Leah Phillips, a six-time All-American at LSU who was competing unattached Friday, finished first with a time of 57.31.
Yale had a pair of top 10 finishes in the shot put, where sophomore
Anna Siciliano was ninth (14.19m) and senior
Makayla Harris was 10th (13.90m).
The Black and Gold Challenge, which is unscored, includes more than 30 schools from throughout the country. Competition concludes Saturday.
