NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The Yale sailing teams had a dominant weekend, winning three regattas. Junior Audrey Foley placed first at the NEISA Women's Singlehanded Championship, the Yale coed sailing team won the Hatch Brown Trophy, a a second coed squad won the Eli Trophy.
The NEISA Women's Singlehanded Championship took place on Friday and Saturday and was hosted by Boston College. Four races were completed on Friday, when racers faced shifty conditions from the north-northwest, ranging from 10 to 12 knots. On Saturday, the breeze came out of the east, which climbed up to 10 knots, and died down during the last two races. Foley won seven of 12 races completed in the competition and beat the second-place boat by 12 points overall. With the victory, Foley earned an automatic berth to the ICSA Singlehanded National Championships from Nov. 7-8 in Rye, N.Y.
Mathias Reimer represented the Bulldogs at the NEISA Open Singlehanded Championship, held at Boston College on Friday and Saturday as well. Reimer placed 13th in his fleet.
The Yale coed team raced at MIT on Saturday for the Hatch Brown Trophy. At the start of racing, the breeze came from the northeast and shifted further east as the day went on. The breeze ranged from 8 to 12 knots, with puffs up to 15 knots. Eight races were completed in each division. Skipper Morgan Pinckney with crew Annabel Woodworth won A division; skipper Dorothy Mendelblatt with crew Genevieve Schmidt won B division; skipper Wyatt Kelly with crew Ashley Highland placed second in C division. The team won the event by 37 points.
The Bulldogs also won the Eli Trophy, hosted at Yale on Saturday. The wind came from the northeast at the start of the day and shifted south as racing went on, ranging from 5 to 8 knots. Skipper Thomas O'Grady with crew Matilda Twigg placed second in A division; skipper Eli Shainker with crews Puiyee Kong and Evan Wang placed sixth in B division; skipper Ryan Tonkovich with crew Margaret Ratzan placed fifth in C division.
The women's team raced in the Regis Trophy on Saturday, hosted by Harvard. The team faced similar conditions to the coed team at MIT, which was also racing nearby on the Charles River. Skipper Carly Kieding with Maren Bradley placed third in A division, and skipper Clara Diaz Suarez with crew Beatrice Formenton placed seventh in B division. The squad placed fourth overall, and each division completed 10 races.
Next week, the Yale Sailing team will compete in two double-handed fleet race regattas and the Match Race Northeast Championship.
