Bulldogs Split Matches at NYU Invitational

JERSEY CITY, N.J.—At the New York University Invitational on Sunday, the Yale men's fencing team took on NYU, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Wayne State. The Bulldogs finished the day 2-2 with bout wins by a variety of fencers using all three weapons.

With a strong showing in the saber competition, Yale was able to squeeze by NYU 14-13. In saber, sophomore Reed Srere won all three of his bouts, with senior captain Hugh O'Cinneide and sophomore Ian Richards winning two apiece.

The Bulldogs' second win of the day was more decisive with a final score of 19-8 over Wayne State. Yale won a majority of the bouts with all three weapons: 6-3 in saber, 8-1 in foil and 5-4 in epee. Senior Sam Broughton and junior Jin Ishizuka led the way in foil with three bout wins each.

Ohio State and Notre Dame proved to be overwhelming opponents for the Bulldogs. Yale lost 22-5 in both matches. Junior Brian Wang was the only Eli in the foil competition to win a bout against both of these teams.

The Bulldogs are back in action on Saturday against Sacred Heart for their only home match of the season.
