WAKEFIELD, R.I. – This weekend the No. 2 Bulldogs placed sixth in a fleet of 18 at the Moody Trophy at the University of Rhode Island and eighth at the Southern Series at Roger Williams University.
At the Moody, two underclassmen took the helm. While they only got two races off in each division on Saturday due to marginally light wind conditions, Sunday's weather proved to be much more promising, allowing the race committee to complete five additional races per division.
In A division, sophomore Malcolm Lamphere sailed with his usual partner, junior Chandler Gregoire. They placed seventh in their division, just 10 points out of the top four.
Freshman Nic Baird with crews senior Emily Johnson and junior Amelia Dobronyi had an excellent performance in B division, despite being disqualified from race 3. With a third place finish, Baird was the only freshman skipper that placed in the top 15 in B division.
Though the Bulldogs sat in eighth after Saturday's racing, their strong performance on Sunday raised them to sixth. If not for the unfortunate disqualification, the Bulldogs would have been second.
In Bristol, R.I., the Bulldogs placed eighth overall at the Southern Series. Sophomore skipper KB Knapp with freshman crew Kira Woods placed second in A, an impressive performance for an underclassman team. In B division, junior skipper Charles Skoda sailed with freshman crews Ayla Besemer and Claire Rossi de Leon. They placed 12th in their division.
Next weekend, the Bulldogs will head to Salve Regina to compete in the New England Sloop Championship, which acts as the qualifier for the 2015 Match Race Nationals. A team will also be sent to Dartmouth for the Captain Hurst and to Providence, R.I. for the Providence College Invite.
